The clos-masures of the Pays de Caux, a unique architecture of its kind

The history of clos-masures,
An architectural heritage protected from sea winds

Attested in the 16th century, the clos-masure is a unique architectural model. It was created to protect farms from sea winds using an ingenious organization of the inner courtyard. The embankments topped with tall trees, or "cauchois ditches", reduce the wind by up to 70% and create a microclimate favourable to crops and livestock. Clos-masures also have an important role in preserving the biodiversity of the Pays de Caux.

The enclosures are much more than just a collection of farm buildings. They are the result of an ingenious organization of the inner courtyard, which makes this architecture unique in its kind. The buildings are leaning parallel to the embankment to prevent the spread of fires, while the dwelling house is often oriented to the south to take advantage of natural light.

The presence of a dovecote, a mansion or a manor house testifies to the high social status of the owner. With their functional organization and their architectural heritage, the clos-masures are a true architectural marvel of the Pays de Caux.

The Pays de Caux still has about 900 clos-masures, but some are threatened by the transformation or disappearance of farms.

In 2013, Department 76 launched a process to inscribe clos-masures on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The preservation of these traditional farms is a challenge for the maintenance of the cultural and environmental identity of the Pays de Caux.

"The farmyard, enclosed by the trees, seemed to be sleeping. [...] Over the embankment, one could see the countryside, a vast plain where crops grew, with clumps of trees in places, and, from place to place, groups of distant workers.
Guy de Maupassant, « Histoire d'une fille de ferme », La maison Tellier, 1881.
